Hearing dog

If you are living with severe to profound hearing loss, a hearing dog could give you practical assistance in and outside the home.

What is a hearing dog?

A hearing dog is the most common and best-known dog role we provide. Hearing dogs have been trained to internationally recognised standards to perform tasks which support someone with hearing loss. As assistance dogs, they have a legal right to accompany their deaf partner in places where pet dogs are not allowed.

We've trained more than 3,600 hearing dogs. Each has gone on to transform the lives of the person they are partnered with.

Hearing dogs are assistance dogs for adults. They work in the home and out and about.

For example, at home they can alert a deaf person to important sounds such as the smoke alarm, oven/cooker timer, and doorbell.

In public they provide confidence and comfort.

A hearing dog wears the distinctive burgundy jacket when out in public. This lets other people know that the dog is in a working role and helps to makes them aware that the person with the dog is deaf – making deafness more ‘visible’.

I feel safe with Alfie in the house, knowing he will alert me if the smoke alarms went off. He gives me so much confidence. I get out and about because of him. I went from being so anxious and not leaving the house, to going out every day. It is like a different life. When we go out, he wears his burgundy Hearing Dogs jacket, and people come over and say hello. I feel more connected to the world around me with him there.
