Causes of hearing loss

There are many causes of hearing loss and several ways of explaining or classifying them. A straightforward way of categorising hearing loss is based on the type of hearing loss and how it relates to the auditory or hearing system.

There are two main types of hearing loss – conductive and sensorineural. When combined, these are known as mixed hearing loss.

How does hearing loss affect the auditory system?

Hearing loss can affect one, or more, of the four parts that make up the hearing or auditory system.

These are commonly known as the outer ear, middle ear, inner ear (the peripheral hearing system) and auditory cortex (the central hearing system).

Causes of conductive hearing loss

Conductive hearing loss is a condition that affects the outer and/or middle ear. Here are some of the common causes of this type of hearing loss.

Causes of sensorineural hearing loss

Sensorineural hearing loss is caused by disorders to the inner ear and central hearing system (brain). Here are some common causes of this type of hearing loss.
