Episode 9:
Holly is a hearing dog!
Posted by Elizabeth Murphy
“Holly has got the most beautiful eyes. If I had to describe her in one phrase, it would be ‘ready for action!’
“When we’re out, people come up to us to get to know Holly, which is good for me socially. I’m an adult learning tutor and I teach British Sign Language* and History – she also comes to work with me and settles down quietly.
“Holly is amazing company and is very loving. When my Aunty was unwell, I took Holly to see her a few times and they both adored seeing each other. I think Holly could sense that she wasn’t well and gave comfort to my Aunty.
“To someone considering applying for their own hearing dog, I’d like to say apply as soon as you can. To her sponsors, I’d like to say thank you so much for sponsoring Holly and helping me achieve my dream and independence.”
Well done to our clever Cockapoo! Alex and Holly make a wonderful team, and it’s thanks to your support that she is now his life-changing canine companion.
It would be wonderful if you’d consider sponsoring another puppy-in-training but, whatever you decide, thank you so much for being Holly’s sponsor.
*Cochlear implant – A cochlear implant is a surgically implanted electronic device that provides a sense of sound to a person who has a severe or profound hearing loss. It turns sounds into electrical signals that travel through a part of the ear called the cochlea, and through the auditory nerve to the brain. The deaf person’s brain then interprets these signals as sound.
*British Sign Language – Using hand gestures, body language and facial expressions instead of spoken words, some deaf people use this visual language
to communicate.
