Episode 6:
Holly and friends
Posted by Elizabeth Murphy
Welcome back to Holly’s Puppy Pen! An important part of Holly’s hearing dog training is making sure that she feels comfortable around other animals and learning when it is and isn’t appropriate to try and play.
Here is Holly being gently introduced to some horses with their foals.

If Holly is on a walk in the countryside with her future deaf partner, she may come across all sorts of animals, such as deer, sheep, cows or horses. These animals have the potential to be intimidating or distracting.
This is why it is incredibly important for Holly to learn, through gentle and positive experiences, that other animals are nothing to afraid of. Holly is also learning to stay focused when she sees these animals, as it is usually not appropriate to run over and play with them.
Holly also showed brilliant focus and lovely manners while walking close to a large herd of deer on a walk in the countryside.

Luckily for Holly, there is still plenty of fun to be had with her puppy pals! Dogs are naturally playful and sociable animals, so playing with other dogs provides Holly with lots of mental and physical enrichment.
Here is Holly ready for an adventure in the park with best friends Finn and Minnie…
… and here she is playing ‘tuggy’ with hearing dog Tegan…

Learning to share toys is part of Holly’s training to play nicely with other dogs that she may meet both on and off lead with her future deaf partner. Holly is also learning that not every dog is interested in playing with her, so it is important that she recognises how to read body language cues from other dogs.
We hope you’ve enjoyed catching up with Holly and seeing how well she is getting on in her training around other animals.
Until next time, from all of us at Hearing Dogs, thank you for sponsoring Holly.
