Hearing dog walker

Our hearing dogs work very hard for their recipients, alerting them to everyday sounds and accompanying them when out and about. Therefore, it is important that they get some time off to have fun, whilst being exercised.

Hearing dog partnerships change lives, providing safety, confidence and companionship to people who are deaf or have hearing loss. Sometimes partners need extra support exercising their dog due to health, age or other circumstances — and that’s where our volunteer Hearing Dog Walkers make a real difference. By giving your time, you’ll help ensure these hardworking dogs get the exercise, stimulation and fun they deserve.

What you’ll do

  • Walk a hearing dog weekly, either locally or by driving to a suitable walking location.
  • Dog walks should be at least 1 hour and we ideally look for a commitment or 2 dog walks per week.
  • You will need to collect the hearing dog from their deaf partner’s home and return them safely after each walk.
  • Follow guidance from the Partnership and Canine Healthcare Team on the dog’s needs
  • Commit to walking in all seasons and weather conditions.

What we need

  • Reliability and realistic availability throughout the year.
  • Willingness to undertake an Enhanced DBS check
  • You should live within 30 minutes of the partnership and be able to easily travel to collect and walk a dog in a suitable location.
  • Confidence communicating with deaf people (guidance will be provided)
  • Previous dog-handling experience is helpful but not essential.

What we provide

  • Full induction, training and ongoing support.
  • Clear guidance on walking routines, safety, dog needs and communication.
  • Enhanced DBS Certification
  • A chance to support a life-changing partnership.
