Hot weather can be wonderful, bringing longer days, time outdoors and more opportunities to be active. But for dogs it can also bring real risks. Unlike us, dogs can’t easily regulate their temperature, meaning even a short time in the heat can quickly become dangerous.
With over 40 years of experience in assistance dog welfare, we know how important it is to keep dogs healthy and comfortable in all conditions.
Whether you live with a hearing dog or simply want the best for dogs in your care, here are some top tips from our Canine Healthcare team to help keep dogs safe in hot weather.
1. Walk at cooler times
Avoid the hottest part of the day and plan walks for early morning or later in the evening when temperatures are lower. Not only is this more comfortable for your dog, it also reduces the risk of overheating and dehydration.
On particularly hot days, consider shortening walks or swapping them for gentle indoor or garden play. Sometimes, keeping cool is more important than keeping active.
2. Beware of hot surfaces
Pavements, sand and artificial grass can become extremely hot and quickly burn your dog’s paw pads. A simple test - if you can’t hold the back of your hand on the surface for five seconds, it’s too hot for your dog.
Where possible, stick to shaded paths, grass or woodland routes. And remember, surfaces stay warm long after the sun has moved.
3. Always remember water
Hydration is essential in warm weather. Always carry fresh water and something your dog is comfortable drinking from. Some dogs prefer their own bowl, so it’s helpful to bring something familiar with you.
Offer water regularly, even if your dog doesn’t seem thirsty - dogs don’t always recognise when they need a drink.
4. Cool your dog down
If your dog gets too warm, move them somewhere shaded and encourage them to rest. You can offer cool (not cold) water and place a damp towel on the ground for them to lie on if they choose.
Very cold water can cause your dog’s body temperature to drop too quickly, which may lead to discomfort or even shock. Dogs cool down best gradually, so gentle cooling over time is much safer. Avoid pouring cold water directly over your dog for the same reason.
Access to shallow water, such as a paddling pool, can also help - as long as your dog is comfortable using it.
