Episode 5:

On holiday with Henry

Posted by Elizabeth Murphy

Welcome back to Henry’s Puppy Pen!

Henry has been on holiday! Let’s see what he got up to…

  1. Henry’s first visit to the beach!

Henry’s holiday started with his first ever trip to the beach – and we think it might be his new favourite place! He enjoyed splashing around in the sea and then running back to have a good sniff in the sand.

Although he doesn’t realise it, exploring the beach is part of Henry’s training. If his future deaf partner lives by the sea, or plans to visit there on holiday, we want to make sure that Henry is prepared and feels confident in a coastal environment.

Henry
  1. Henry is King of the Castle!

Time for some sightseeing – we think Henry looks very majestic posed in front the ancient castle ruins. He was not even fazed by the unusual shape of the building!

Tourist attractions often draw in large crowds of people, which can be distracting for a hearing-dog-in-training. Although it is important for Henry to be sociable, he is learning that it is not appropriate to say hello to every person (or dog) that he sees. We want his main priority to be staying focused on his deaf partner while they are out together in public.

  1. All aboard the ferry!

During his holiday, Henry also took his first trip on the local ferry with Janet, his Volunteer Dog Trainer – and he was a superstar!

Travelling on the ferry could have potentially been a strange experience for Henry, as there are unusual movements and sounds which he has not encountered before. For this reason, it is important that Henry is introduced to public transport at a slow and gentle pace. With lots of praise and encouragement from Janet, Henry loved his ferry adventure and will remember it as a fun and positive experience.
