Could you help someone find their Spirit?
Your kindness could help someone rediscover the connection, companionship and confidence that hearing loss can take away. After Karen suddenly lost her hearing, she felt isolated from the people and world around her. Then she met Spirit.
"For a long time, I felt like I was constantly on the outside. I was pretending to hear. Pretending to understand. Smiling and nodding when I wasn’t always sure what had been said.
When I suddenly lost my hearing, everything changed. Conversations that used to feel effortless became exhausting. My brain worked overtime trying to fill in the gaps, leaving me drained by the end of the day.
The hardest part wasn't missing sounds. It was feeling disconnected from the people and world around me. The hearing aids helped with amplification, but they couldn't ease the loneliness. I worried people thought I was rude when I hadn't heard them, and I often felt like I was on the outside looking in.
Then Spirit came into my life.
He didn't just alert me to important sounds. He gave me confidence, companionship and a way back into conversations.
I can honestly say he's changed my world."
Karen's story is deeply personal. But sadly, she's far from alone. Across the UK, 1 in 3 people are affected by hearing loss, and its impact reaches far beyond what someone can hear. It can touch every part of daily life - practically, socially and emotionally - leaving people exhausted by conversations, anxious in busy places and feeling disconnected from the people and communities they love.
After her GP suggested she contact our Hearing Link Services, Karen reached an important turning point. For the first time since losing her hearing, she felt truly listened to. Together, they explored the support that would best meet her individual needs, helping Karen feel ready to apply for a hearing dog. Every aspect of her home, work and lifestyle was then carefully considered before she was matched with Spirit.
Spirit alerts Karen to important sounds like the smoke alarm, doorbell and cooker timer, and helps her know when someone is trying to get her attention so she can join conversations more easily. But his greatest gift is something much harder to measure.
"He’s not just a hearing dog,” Karen says. “He’s my partner."
With Spirit by her side, she no longer feels like she’s missing out. She feels safer at home, more confident when she’s out and about and able to reconnect with the people around her.
His impact reaches beyond Karen too. As a teacher of students with complex needs, she has watched Spirit’s calm presence help autistic young people feel more settled, communicate more confidently and engage with the world around them.
