It may be hard to believe, but with your support this puppy can totally transform a deaf person’s life. The puppy above is only eight weeks old, but she has already started her important training to becoming a hearing dog. Find out a bit more about this journey below. 

Where a hearing dog puppy’s journey starts

Are you wondering where we get these future hearing dogs from? We have our very own breeding scheme that produces puppies with all the right qualities to become hearing dogs. They stay with brood holder volunteers, who look after the pups until they are around eight weeks old, and even kick-start their training!

A hearing dog puppy’s training

Once a puppy leaves their mum and siblings, they meet their puppy socialising volunteer, who gives them all their basic training and helps them to get used to towns, public transport and other every day environments. A hearing dog puppy stays with their volunteer until they are about 16 months old, and then they come to one of our Hearing Dogs training centres to develop their soundwork.

Our expert dog trainers spend about four months teaching our hearing dog pups their important soundwork and tailor training to suit the needs of the deaf person they will be partnered with. This specialised training focuses on reacting to the sounds they will alert their deaf recipient to, such as the doorbell and fire alarm.

These range from important sounds like the doorbell, text messages and alarm clock to crucial danger signals such as the fire alarm. But these amazing animals do so much more. Deafness can be a very isolating disability as many people with hearing loss feel disconnected from those around them.
