This month in training: October 2020
Posted by Matt Sadler
It has been a busy few weeks for our puppies in training as they've been shopping, reached some very important milestones and even took a trip to the beach.
1. Biscuit hit the beach
Hearing dog puppy Biscuit has been on his first trip to the coast and he loved every second.
From getting comfortable in the car on the way down, to splashing in the sea, dog-friendly ice cream and perfect café settles - it was one big adventure for a very happy boy.
All hearing dog puppies get to have a run round and explore a beach in their training - in case their future partner lives by the sea or plans to holiday there.
2. Kodak has passed the first stage of training
He was a bit shy of showing off his certificate at first...
But congratulations to cocker spaniel puppy Kodak for passing the first stage of his hearing dog training – the ‘Puppy One Star’.
Kodak has been working on his basic cues, like this lovely sit and down. What will Kodak be learning next? Find out here.
3. She's a clever Kookie
From a puppy in the early stages of their training, to a wonderful girl who has a reached major milestone.
Congratulations to Kookie for passing her Hearing Dogs assessment and it is easy to see why with soundwork as impressive as this.
In this video you'll see Kookie alerting to a timer and the doorbell, as well as demonstrating the danger signal for a smoke alarm.
4. I’m keeping my eye on you
Hearing dog puppy Kes made sure his treats weren't going anywhere as he practised his wait!
Kes did a great job of resisting the tasty treats until told to do so, and thoroughly enjoyed his very well-deserved rewards.
We teach our dogs about impulse control as it helps them to question whether their immediate thoughts are the right thing to do. Volunteer puppy trainers show the pups that they sometimes have to ‘wait’ patiently to get what they want.
5. Buddy has been shoe shopping
We have seen in the past that Buddy's favourite game is to steal a shoe, which makes this sit even more impressive.
Buddy kept his focus on his volunteer dog trainer at all times while out shopping, even with his favourite distraction nearby.
Well done Buddy.
6. Zippy is a very smart boy
Cocker spaniel Zippy was set a trio of puzzles to solve over lunchtime.
Games like these not only help to slow down a dog's eating, but they also keep them mentally stimulated and Zippy got to prove how intelligent he is
Meet the pups in our Puppy Training Scheme
These cute puppies are training to become life-changers. Sponsor them from £3 a month and follow their journey as they learn how to help a deaf person.
