This month in training: January 2024
Posted by Matt Sadler
Our clever hearing dog puppies are back to their training classes after a Christmas break, and Teasel has already shown just how relaxed she is on public transport. Find out what our pups have been up to.
1. All aboard for Teasel
Teasel showed lovely focus on her volunteer trainer during their journey on a Metro train.
It’s important our pups experience public transport before they become hearing dogs, as their future deaf partners may use buses or trains to travel.
Teasel was the perfect passenger and did such a great job!
2. Say hello to Esme
This is cocker spaniel Esme, and Esme started her early hearing dog training just before Christmas.
Esme is picking up her basic cues like 'sit' and 'wait' so quickly and we're looking forward to following her training in 2024. Find out what else Esme will be learning in the first stage of her training.
Have lots of fun, Esme!
3. Alfie is a star!
Congratulations to amazing Alfie for passing the second stage of his hearing dog training - the Puppy 2 Star.
This is a big milestone in Alfie's training as it means he is now the proud owner of a burgundy training jacket, which he will wear when practising in public places and on public transport.
Our clever Labrador has already tried it on for size and did a brilliant job on his visit to a supermarket. Well done, Alfie!
4. Summer and Skye go shopping
Sisters Summer (first photo) and Skye have been on an adventure, as they visited a garden centre together.
Garden centres are the perfect place for our younger pups to train in as they are quiet environments with lots of new sights, sounds and smells to investigate.
Summer and Skye did a fab job keeping focused next to some very tasty treats and our clever siblings will start to visit busier public places as their training progresses.
5. Marvellous Milo
Hearing dogs alert to a number of important and life-saving sounds, but did you know they can also be trained to alert to a baby's cry?
This can be a lifeline for deaf parents who need to know when their child is crying, and this adds to the safety and security of a home.
Marvellous Milo has been learning how to alert to a baby monitor and we think he is doing brilliantly!
6. Congratulations to perfect Piper
Perfect Piper is going to be a life-changing hearing dog after passing her final assessment.
From a very cute puppy learning her 'sit', into such a clever girl who is a superstar at her soundwork - this is Piper's journey through hearing dog training.
Thank you so much to Piper's incredible team - she is the biggest credit to them.
