This month in training: January 2021

Our clever hearing dog puppies are back training after a Christmas break. Find out what they have been learning and why cockapoo Coco is celebrating a milestone.

1. Learning to be paw-fect passengers

Four photos showing our clever hearing dog puppies waiting for a bus, sitting beautifully during the journey and then leaving the bus

A huge thank you to Stagecoach, who kindly gave us private use of a bus and a driver before Christmas to help with training on public transport in a socially-distanced and safe way.

It's important that hearing dog puppies learn to feel completely happy travelling on public transport before they become hearing dogs. If a deaf person frequently gets a bus or train, we want to make sure their new hearing dog is totally comfortable with the experience.

Leoni, April, Lady, Faye, Freya and Wren did a brilliant job in their short journeys and showed they are very happy and relaxed passengers.

Well done everyone!

2. Way to go, Coco!

Cockapoo Coco was over the moon to find out she had passed the second stage of her hearing dog training - the Puppy Two Star.

This means Coco is now the proud owner of a burgundy training jacket, which she will wear when training in public places. Find out what Coco will be learning next here.

3. There's no taking the biscuit with our clever Lab

Biscuit made sure his tasty treats weren't going anywhere as he kept a close eye on them at all times whilst practising his self control.

Impulse control is an important skill for any happy and relaxed dog to have, and Biscuit enjoyed his reward for a brilliant wait.

Biscuit has also started learning about the sounds he will alert his future deaf partner to and he is picking things up so quickly.

Here he is nudging his volunteer dog trainer and then leading them to the source of the sound.

4. Cocker spaniel Zippy has a way with words

Hearing dog in training Zippy is such a clever boy!

He knows to wait for the 'off you go' command before eating his treats, and can even recognise that phrase amongst words which sound very similar.

5. A very special role for a very special boy

Cocker spaniel Willis moved in with his partner and their family just before Christmas after passing his assessment to be a child's hearing dog.

We are so proud of you Willis and we know you will make an incredible difference.

Sponsor a puppy and change a deaf person's life
