This month in training: January 2020

Posted by Matt Sadler

Our clever hearing dog puppies are back to their training classes after a Christmas break. Find out what they have been learning so far in 2020.

1. All aboard for Benny

Cocker spaniel Benny on the train

Learning to feel comfortable & relaxed on public transport is an important part of hearing dog training, and Benny is proving to be the perfect passenger.

Benny waited patiently at the train station before sitting and settling beautifully during the journey.

2. Watch out world, Mona’s ready to explore

Cocker spaniel puppy Mona on her first outdoor walk

Three-month-old Mona has reached a very exciting milestone as she's been on her first outdoor walk and loved every second of it.

Mona is getting to know all about the world around her and is being encouraged to explore at a pace that she's comfortable with.

It looks as though our clever cocker spaniel has already mastered the perfect sit as well, which is one of the basic commands that will stand her in good stead for the rest of her training.

3. Tea-time for our T litter

Tia, Truffle, Tigger, Tara, Teddy, Terry and Theo are showing their impeccable table manners as they enjoy their new food.

Our adorable T litter are already quite the characters.

4. Bow checked in at the airport

Dropping people off at the airport? Well, it's the perfect opportunity to get a bit of practice in a busy and unusual environment.

Hearing dog in training Bow showed brilliant focus on his volunteer puppy trainer, as well as this lovely sit.

5. Lexie did the weekly shop

Cocker spaniel Lexie's first visit to a supermarket

Lexie has started the year with her first visit to a supermarket.

Hearing dogs accompany a deaf person in lots of public places – including supermarkets. In places like these, they need to understand all the tasty foods on display are not for them, and they should be on their best behaviour regardless of all the distractions.

Our clever cocker spaniel was perfectly behaved and even managed to avoid the temptation of all those tasty treats on the shelves. Here she is sitting beautifully at the checkout.

6. Chewy took a trip into town

Miniature poodle Chewy

Miniature poodle Chewy demonstrated some fab focus on his training trip into town.

We slowly introduce our pups to busier places, from villages to towns and then to cities, making sure they are comfortable every step of the way.

Well done Chewy.

7. Grant passed his assessment!

Grant has passed his Hearing Dogs assessment

A very well-deserved 'boop' for Grant, who has passed his assessment to become a life-changing hearing dog.

Grant has made a big impression on a lot of people during his training & a huge thank you must go to everyone who has helped him along the way.

Congratulations Grant.

Hi Ann, I'm glad you enjoyed this month's update - our pups are so clever (and adorable). Otis is doing a great job in his training and is getting to experience lots of public places like supermarkets and cafes. He's also an incredibly happy boy with lots of doggy friends to play with.
