This month in training: December 2019
Posted by Matt Sadler
Our clever hearing dog puppies have been busy learning new skills, which will one day help deaf people to leave loneliness behind. Here's what they've been up to this month.
1. Viking explored Oxford
Hearing dog in training Viking had a busy day in Oxford, as he practised using public transport and then did a spot of shopping in a busy environment.
Not only was the trip a great way for Viking to work on some of the skills he has been learning, but it also allowed us to assess just how well his training is going.
The results are in and Viking is doing brilliantly!
2. Gretel's looking very smart
Hearing dogs are easily identifiable thanks to their burgundy jackets, but getting used to wearing one is an important part of training.
We want our dogs to always feel comfortable and relaxed, so Gretel is practising wearing her jacket at home before using it in public places.
3. Erica is excelling in her training
A huge round of a-paws to cocker spaniel Erica, who has just passed the second stage of her hearing dog training - the 'Puppy Two Star'.
Here she is showing off her perfect sit and fab focus, two skills which will stand her in very good stead throughout the remainder of her hearing dog training.
4. Watkins went Christmas shopping
Hearing dogs can come across some very unusual objects when out with their deaf partner, so it's important they aren't fazed by some odd sights & sounds.
Hearing dog puppy Watkins did a spot of Christmas shopping and met a very large nutcracker, who he made instant friends with.
5. O'dorable Orla is mastering her basic commands
This is the beautiful Orla, who is doing a great job in her early training.
Orla is a wonderful and happy girl, and is already mastering her basic commands, like this perfect sit.
6. Oakley took a trip into the 'Big Smoke'
First visit to London? Not a problem for Oakley.
He took the new experience in his stride and settled perfectly during the train journey.
Oakley then enjoyed seeing the sights and eating a tasty treat, before being a very good boy on the journey home.
7. George has graduated to big school
Wishing the very best of luck to gorgeous George, who has just moved up to 'big school'.
This is the final stage of hearing dog training and will be where George focuses more on the sounds he will alert his future deaf partner to.
Keep up the great work George.
