This month in training: August 2021

Posted by Matt Sadler

Supermarkets, settles, and being stars on public transport - our pups and hearing dogs in training have been busy learning lots of new skills. Find out what they have been up to.

1. Clever Cain has been on his first bus journey

Cain's first bus journey was a resounding success!

The short trip was the result of a few training sessions as Cain first got used to the new sights and sounds, before he then practised getting on and off a stationary bus.

Great job Cain.

2. A different kind of train-ing for Humphrey

A very happy Humphrey has been learning all about trains.

If a deaf person frequently gets a bus or train, we want to make sure their new hearing dog is totally comfortable with the experience, and Humphrey wasn't fazed at all by the new sights and sounds.

3. Beautiful Bess showed off her lovely settle

Black Labrador Bess was one very smiley girl when she took a trip to an opticians as part of her hearing dog training.

Bess settled beautifully and waited patiently throughout her visit. We are so proud of her and the progress she is making in her training.

Settling is a key skill for any hearing dog, as it's what they will do when accompanying their deaf partner to busy public places, such as hospitals, audiologists and restaurants.

4. Miniature poodle Nyla went shopping

Two photos side by side of miniature poodle Nyla at the supermarket. The first shows Nyla sitting and focused on her trainer and the second is Nyla walking down an aisle

Nyla showed amazing focus on her volunteer puppy trainer during a trip to a supermarket.

Hearing dogs accompany a deaf person in lots of public places – including supermarkets. In places like these, they need to understand all the tasty foods on display are not for them, and they should be on their best behaviour regardless of all the distractions.

5. Pluto celebrated a big achievement

A very proud Pluto sitting next to his certificate, which he was awarded for passing the second stage of training.

Not only did Pluto receive the certificate, but completing this part of training means he also now has his own burgundy jacket which he will wear when training in public places.

6. Super-cute Eric started his hearing dog training

It is our absolute pleasure to introduce you to cocker spaniel puppy Eric.

Eric has just started his hearing dog training and is already making lots of new friends. You can find out what Eric is learning in his first stage of hearing dog training here.

7. Finally, from puppy Eric to future life-changing hearing dog Erik

Black Labrador Erik has grown into the most amazing boy and he is now celebrating a huge achievement - passing his assessment to be a life-changing hearing dog!

Congratulations to the wonderful team Erik has had behind him throughout training. The next stage for Erik is the very exciting moment of meeting his deaf partner.

Meet the pups in our Puppy Training Scheme

These cute puppies are training to become life-changers. Sponsor them from £3 a month and follow their journey as they learn how to help a deaf person.
