This month in training - May 2018

Posted by Sarah O'Brien

Take a look at what our clever hearing dog puppies have been getting up to in their training this month.

1. Kia started her puppy training

A big welcome to hearing dog puppy Kia - who has just moved into her new puppy training volunteers' home this month!

Kia will spend the next year learning all the skills needed to become a life-changing hearing dog - and will one day help a deaf person leave loneliness behind.

But for now, Kia is focusing on getting used to her new surroundings, getting big and strong and being very, very cute.

2. Quinn demonstrated some amazing impulse control

It’s really important that hearing dogs have impeccable manners at all times, especially when they’re assisting a deaf person in public. So we teach our pups about impulse control, which helps them to think about their immediate impulses as they might not always be the right thing to do. Puppy socialising volunteers show the pups that they sometimes have to ‘wait’ patiently to get what they want.

The best way to practice this is with food – as demonstrated by a very calm hearing dog puppy Quinn, who is waiting for his puppy socialising volunteer to give him the go ahead to eat the yummy treats on his paws. If only we could all do so well around tasty treats...

3. Kimba experienced a lift for the first time

Hearing dogs accompany a deaf person in lots of public places - and may need to use a lift from time to time. In siutations like this, our dogs need to be on their best behaviour, and understand that there's nothing to be afraid of.

Kimba did a perfect 'wait' command during this first experience, and was totally unfazed by the movement. Well done, Kimba!

4. Hestor experienced a plane ride - and got to visit the cockpit!

Looks like hearing dog puppy Hester might fancy a career change!

He experienced his first ever flight as part of his training - and the crew invited him to investigate the cockpit He was so well behaved and we are super proud!

Meet the pups in our Puppy Training Scheme

These cute puppies are training to become life-changers. Sponsor them for £3 a month and follow their journey as they learn how to help a deaf person.
