This month in training: March 2018

Posted by Sarah O'Brien

Our pups have been busy in their training classes! Take a look at what they've been learning this month.

1. Hearing dog puppy Abney visited Manchester Piccadilly station!

Hearing dog ambassador Abney was completely unfazed by the hustle and bustle of Manchester's Piccadilly station. We slowly introduce our dogs to busier places, from villages to towns and then to cities. We always make sure the dog is comfortable with a small place before we take them somewhere bigger.

She was out with volunteers and recipients last week to help raise money and awareness for the work we do at Hearing Dogs. Even through she was doing a fab job fundraising, she was also learning about meeting new people, busy environments and having lots of patience. We're super proud Abney!

2. Hearing dog puppy Obi did a fantastic settle!

Here you can see a perfect ‘settle’. This is what our clever canines do when they’re in places such as hospitals, audiologists and restaurants. Instead of creating a fuss, they’re trained to settle down and take it easy. As demonstrated by Obi, who is taking things very easy!

3. Foxy took a trip into The Big Smoke

Hearing dog pup Foxy practiced the perfect 'sit' when waiting for the train this month!

It’s really important our hearing dog pups experience travelling on public transport before they become a hearing dog. If a deaf person gets a train to work, we want to make sure their new hearing dog is comfortable with this experience.

4. Hearing dog puppy Clay went shopping for toys!

It’s really important that hearing dogs have impeccable manners at all times, especially when they’re assisting a deaf person in public. So we teach our pups about impulse control, which helps them to think about their immediate impulses as they might not always be the right thing to do. Puppy socialising volunteers show the pups that they sometimes have to ‘wait’ patiently to get what they want.

Meet the pups in our Puppy Training Scheme

These cute puppies are training to become life-changers. Sponsor them for £3 a month and follow their journey as they learn how to help a deaf person.
