Five ways Poodles will make you smile
Posted by Matt Sadler
When it comes to Poodles, there are oodles of ways they brighten up our day.
On top of their intelligence, companionable nature and confidence which make them such great hearing dogs (we train the Miniature kind), there are many other unique ‘Poodley’ traits that bring us joy, every time.
1. A style for every season
When most people think of Poodles, an extravagant hairstyle no doubt springs to mind.
Their classic bobbly haircut originated when they were used as water-retrieving dogs. It stopped their coats from becoming too heavy with water whilst protecting their joints and still keeping them warm (the word ‘Poodle’ actually comes from the German word ‘Pudel’ meaning ‘to splash in water’).
Nowadays, these chic canines are seen with many other hairstyles, including the delightful ‘teddy bear cut’, as modelled by Kristo below. After all, their coat never stops growing, so all this pampering is essential!
2. Every day is the best day ever
A Poodle’s unstoppable zest for life is contagious. They always want to know what’s happening next and are first on the scene when there’s new and exciting activity.
So, whether it’s grey outside or the sun is shining, sharing your home with one of these fluffy friends, like Ziggy here, is sure to put a spring in your step.
3. Friends for life
Poodles are loving, affectionate and loyal and form strong bonds with their owners. However, they also enjoy a bit of me-time and have no problem chilling out whilst their human gets on with the housework.
It’s this amazing companionship they provide that makes them such wonderful assistance dogs. Just take it from Poodle, Rosie, and their deaf partner, Laura.
4. Best in puppy class
If you’ve spent time with a Poodle, you’ll know that they’re quick-learning and intelligent dogs. They thrive on learning new tricks, playing new games or figuring out a treat puzzle.
Their natural love of learning is just one of the reasons they make fantastic hearing dogs. Poodles are often top of the class in their training, like Rhona below. Learning to alert to sounds is just another elaborate game they get to play with their favourite human!
5. And last but not least…spectacular sprinting!
Watching a Poodle run is a sight to behold – and it’s impossible not to smile! Poodles, like Mocha here, are full of energy and just love to run. You can almost spot a trail of dust behind them as they reach their top speed.
Due to the amazingly trainable nature of Poodles, they’re usually brilliant at coming back when called, too. This wonderful run-and-recall routine makes them absolutely joyful companions in the park.
