Chatable – the useful hearing app for iPhone and Android

Posted by Matt Sadler

We would like to introduce you to an exciting hearing aid app, which can make one-to-one conversation much easier for anyone struggling to hear, particularly when there is background noise.

Chatable is a groundbreaking app that reproduces the voice of the person talking to you during one-to-one conversations, but louder and clearer, while simultaneously reducing background noise, such as music, hubbub, reverberation, and other sounds.

Chatable – the useful hearing app for iPhone and Android

Chatable is available on both iOS (iPhone) and Android, works for many levels of hearing loss, and can be used without the need for a hearing test. It can reduce reliance on lipreading, which could prove very helpful at this moment, especially when talking to people wearing face masks in places such as hospitals, supermarkets, and even in pubs and restaurants.

As the app works like a remote microphone, it can also be useful for one-to-one conversations while social distancing.

Chatable can also be a great substitute for hearing aids in the event of an emergency such as flat batteries, lost or broken aids and not being able to visit an audiologist.

A number of our hearing dog recipients, volunteers and staff have tried the app and are now using it regularly. Watch the video below to see Chloe Whitelock, who works in our client services team, and others, trying the app for the first time.

How does Chatable work?

Simply download the app to your iPhone or Android, connect to headphones (ideally noise cancelling headphones for the best experience), open the app, and start exploring. You can use the sliders to turn up the volume of the person speaking to you (or the person speaking on the TV!), turn down background noise, and then enjoy an enhanced listening experience during one-to-one conversations. Please be patient – it may take a little time to get used to it.

There is a free and a paid for version of the app, the difference being how much you can modify the volume and level of background noise (on Android), or the number of minutes you can use the service for (100 free minutes on iPhone).

How do I try Chatable?

To try the app, just follow these steps:

  1. Download the app to your phone
  2. Open the app and connect your headphones
  3. Follow the onscreen instructions and click on ‘Demo’ or ‘Instructions’ for more guidance
  4. Try it out! Try it while watching TV or when having a conversation with music on in the background
  5. If you have any feedback, positive or negative, please provide it directly through the app or by emailing support@chatableapps.com

For help or support using the app, you can contact support@chatableapps.com or use the Live Chat function on Chatable’s website.

We really hope you find Chatable useful. We believe this app is a very helpful development in making one-to-one communication easier and will help thousands of people with hearing loss.
