Meet Ambassador Dog Beck

Posted by Matt Sadler

It is our pleasure to introduce you to an amazing volunteer who has helped to raise thousands of pounds for Hearing Dogs, has visited hundreds of community groups to raise awareness, and is always very popular wherever he goes…

Meet Beck – a 10-year-old Cockapoo, who is one of our incredible ambassador dogs!

Grahame is holding Beck, who is looking at the camera with his tongue sticking out. To the left of the photo is Jan and two the right are two women smiling. The photo is from a fundraising event.

Along with his wonderful volunteers Grahame and Jan, Beck has helped to raise over £35,000 for Hearing Dogs. Beck, Grahame and Jan have travelled to every corner of Yorkshire in their mission to spread the word about Hearing Dogs.

From hundreds of talks to local groups, through to fundraising events, ‘Team Beck’ have raised so much awareness of the work we do and how hearing dogs change their deaf partners’ lives.

Beck is retiring from his role in August, and we wanted to celebrate his, Grahame’s and Jan’s amazing contributions to Hearing Dogs.

Grahame said: “Beck is perfect for his very important role because of his sociable character and confidence. He just loves people. He is not worried by crowds, is brilliant with young children and enjoys cuddles.

“He has a knack for getting people’s attention and makes sure that he greets every person when we do a talk. He demonstrates his soundwork beautifully whether this be to a small group or a large school assembly.”

Beck regularly visits a local primary school where he listens to children who are reluctant to read, or who find it difficult to read to an adult. The children respond positively to his patience and calming effect.

Ambassador dog Beck is sitting on bed red cushion and at a school and is being read to.

The impact Beck has had in these situations is so positive that in an OFSTED report Beck was congratulated for his help in raising the level of literacy in the school. Since then, the school have held a number of events to raise funds for Hearing Dogs.

Jan said: “There is so much joy in seeing Beck ‘share the love’ with everyone he meets. He never judges or leaves anyone out and I take so much from that. Volunteering is so much more than just giving back – it is simply a privilege to do what we do.”

Grahame added: “Volunteering has been a most rewarding experience and has enabled me to learn new skills and meet lots of interesting people. Knowing that one is contributing to helping to change a person life is a very humbling thing.”

Grahame and Jan are incredible ambassadors of Hearing Dogs and take any opportunity to tell the world about the work that we do.

A huge thank you to both of them, to Beck, and to all our amazing ambassador teams around the UK.
