John Bower MBE BVSc MRCVS
John was the senior partner of a veterinary hospital practice with four satellite surgeries in Plymouth. For twenty years he was also a Veterinary Advisor to Petplan Insurance Company, and is a published author and past president of the British Veterinary Association.
John had enjoyed seeing hearing dogs and their recipients in his surgery for many years and when asked on retirement to join the Board of Trustees, was pleased to accept. He is now pleased to be involved in this wonderful charity and to bring his expertise with the dogs for the benefit of the Charity.
In addition to his Hearing Dogs for Deaf People involvement, John is also a trustee of the Petplan Charitable Trust, was a trustee of the BVA Animal Welfare Foundation for some 18 years, and was a Veterinary Advisor to Petplan Insurance Company for 23 years. He is a Past President of the British Veterinary Association and the British Small Animal Veterinary Association.
John has written several books including The Cat Owner's Veterinary Handbook (2009), and he is co-author of The Dog Owner's Veterinary Handbook, The Dog Owner's Problem Solver, The Cat Owner's Problem Solver & Veterinary Practice Management.
John received the BSAVA Melton Award in 1991 for services to Small Animal Practice and the MBE in the New Year Honours List 2010 for services to the BVA Animal Welfare Association.
He lives with Caroline, his wife, who is also a veterinary surgeon, on a small farm in Devon where they breed Black Welsh Mountain sheep. For relaxation John enjoys walking with Harry, their Border x Jack Russell Terrier, bird watching, campervanning, travelling and a few rounds of golf.
