How to help

Can your school help us train a hearing dog?

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People is a charity, and relies entirely on donations. It costs £5,000 to train each hearing dog. About £2,500 of this is needed for the actual training itself - an additional £2,500 is needed for aftercare throughout the dog's life. This money is raised by the people, schools, clubs and churches and others who so generously support our work.

It takes about four months to train a hearing dog. If your school sponsors a hearing dog for £5,000 or half its training for £2,500 you will receive a photograph of the hearing dog you have helped to train.

Here are some ideas of how your school can help us by raising funds.

Perform a play

You could use one of the Hearing Dogs for Deaf People plays from this site or from the Togs for Dogs pack. Ask the class or school to practise it and then perform it for parents and friends. Those attending could be asked to make a donation to Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.

Sponsor a sound

Use the ‘Sponsor a Sound’ sheet in the Togs for Dogs pack to learn about deafness, and collect sponsor money as you learn. You will have to listen out for special sounds for a week, and be sponsored for each one you notice and note on your form.

Collecting stamps

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People collect used postage stamps, as we can use these to make money by selling them to a dealer for stamp collectors. Your class or school can collect as many used stamps as possible and send them to us.

Recycling

We also collect used printer cartridges/ ink cartridges (except  Epsom); maybe your school could save up used cartridges.

Hold an event

If your school or class is holding an event, perhaps you could ask the people who come to make a donation to Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. If you let people know in advance, most people are happy to help a good cause.

How about holding a non-uniform day, a fashion show – or even a dog show? There are many events you can hold which help you learn and can raise vital funds for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. One of our local branches may be able to help you, and you can get support materials from us.

If you are holding a fundraising event, you can contact Hearing Dogs for Deaf People – we will be able to send you posters, stickers and other materials to make your day more fun!

Every school which helps us will receive a special certificate commemorating their achievement.

In some areas, we have local representatives who may be able to visit your school and give a talk about the hearing dogs, and perhaps even bring along a dog for you to meet.

Please ring us on 01844 348133, and we will try and put you in touch with somebody.

Please do try and help by holding a fundraising event – without your help, we cannot train more hearing dogs!
