Supporter story: Claire Eaton fundraising at the London Marathon
One of the Charity’s runners from last year’s Virgin London Marathon, Claire Eaton, tells us all about the event and why she supports Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. Claire (pictured - left) is a puppy socialising trainer at the Charity.
Why did you choose to raise money for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People?
Within my role at the Charity, I get to see the hearing dog partnerships and notice at first-hand the real change hearing dogs make to the deaf person’s life. I also know that the care and attention needed to socialise and train a hearing dog puppy doesn't come cheap, so raising money for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People seemed like the natural thing to do.
How important do you feel the work of the Charity is?
It’s very important. The confidence a hearing dog brings to a deaf person as well as the everyday sound work they are trained to do are both equally as vital.
What would you say to someone thinking of raising money for the Charity?
Think about wearing fancy dress during your run as it gives your friends and family an additional reason to sponsor you. It also grabs people’s attention while you’re running and the added support provides a big motivational boost.
And finally, how tough was the run?
I found the run really tough as I picked up an injury just before the marathon, however I would say having a running partner really helped. We ran the first half separately and joined-up at the half way point and crossed the finish line together. Also, I would encourage supporters to go to the Charity’s cheering point because knowing they are there really does spur you on.
