Puppy socialising – train a puppy and change a life

We are always on the lookout for new puppy socialisers to help train a puppy and change a life. Currently we are recruiting for puppy socialisers in Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Cambridgeshire, Devon, Hampshire, Hertfordshire, Oxfordshire and Yorkshire.

We hear from three sets of socialisers, husband and wife team Sylvia and Alan Sturges – socialisers of Opal – socialisers of Tammy, Lynda and Keith McGregor and Nicola Mills who is socialising Myrtle and ask them what’s involved in their volunteer role.

Why did you become a puppy socialiser?

Lynda and Keith: “We wanted to become a part of a life-changing charity, and becoming a puppy socialiser with Hearing Dogs for Deaf People seemed the perfect opportunity to do this.”

Nicola: “I became a puppy socialiser because I feel like in this role, I am really doing something for the community and helping others.”

Sylvia and Alan: “We enjoy raising awareness of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People knowing that we are doing something to change the life of a deaf person in the process.”

As a puppy socialiser, what do you personally gain out of the role?

Lynda and Keith: “It really is a lovely way of having a dog and as puppy socialisers, we get to meet lots of different people.”

Nicola: “It’s just great for all the family to come in to the kitchen every morning and be greeted by Myrtle – it makes it all worthwhile.”

Sylvia and Alan: “We gain a lot of satisfaction because hearing dog recipients tell us how much the dogs change their lives bringing them greater companionship and independence.”

What would you say to someone thinking of becoming a puppy socialiser?

Lynda and Keith: “It’s great fun and you will really love learning more about how puppy socialising ultimately helps a deaf person.”

Nicola: “If you don’t want the long-term commitment of having your own pet dog, this is perfect.”

Sylvia and Alan: “Hearing Dogs for Deaf People are very supportive to all puppy socialisers – it’s very worthwhile.”
