The eight hikers and their loyal canine companion, Bonnie, set out on a 70-mile stretch of the Coast to Coast walk.
Their diligent preparations for the trek stood them in good stead when on day four – on the Grasmere to Patterdale stretch – they came across a lady who had broken her ankle and had been sitting, with her husband for the better part of an hour in the freezing wind and rain.
Laura said: “Thank goodness, we had taken our equipment so seriously. Whipping out the yellow hi-vis rescue tent, my fiancé, Tom was able to shelter the couple instantly, then wrap the damsel in distress in a rather cosy duvet, perform first aid on the limb and provide sustenance to a rather shocked husband. A modern day superman and no cape in sight. Meanwhile, another lady passing by also slipped and she too ended up with a fracture so she too ended up in our tent.”
Laura contacted the emergency services and, when the air ambulance broke through the fog, they had no trouble spotting the rescue area.
They completed their challenge in five days. Laura said: “We raised nearly £5,000 for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People and that has made every blister and aching bone worth it.”
