This can take place to help the Charity celebrate Hearing Dogs week during the first week of June, but can also be held at any time throughout the year.
Nearly nine million of the UK population experience some degree of hearing loss. That is one person in every seven. Over 650,000 of these people are severely or profoundly deaf and could benefit from a hearing dog.
Hearing dogs change lives. They alert their deaf owners to sounds that hearing people take for granted, providing greater independence, confidence and security. Dogs are donated by breeders and members of the public, and the Charity also has its own breeding scheme. Whenever possible the dogs are selected from rescue centres.
The dogs are trained to alert deaf people to everyday household sounds by touching with a paw and leading to the source of the sound. For sounds such as the smoke alarm, the dogs will touch then drop to the floor to indicate danger.
Ruth Dunkin, events manager for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People says: “You can Paws for Coffee whenever it suits you. Whether it’s just a quick coffee at work or after dinner at a black tie event, everyone can join in. Hearing Dogs receives no government funding and relies on the generosity of members of the public, trusts and companies to continue its important work. That’s why we want as many people as possible to Paws for Coffee and raise much needed funds for Hearing Dogs. It doesn’t matter if you can raise £5 or £500, it all helps.”
The Charity has put together a fantastic free support pack containing everything you need to make the most of a Paws for Coffee event. It includes invitations and recipes, and has many exciting ideas to use such as how to cook Flapjack Russells or Springer Spaniel Sponges.
