Specsavers Hearing Centres have chosen Hearing Dogs for Deaf People as their national charity for 2009. Sound Barrier Stars Awards is a new joint initiative between Hearing Dogs for Deaf People and Specsavers Hearing Centres to find the nation’s heroes who are deaf or have profound hearing loss.Specsavers

Nearly nine million of the UK population experience some degree of hearing loss. That’s one person in every seven. Over 650,000 of these people are severely or profoundly deaf and could benefit from a hearing dog.

The Sound Barrier Stars awards are an opportunity for you to nominate a special person who has achieved incredible feats coping with hearing loss. Ten regional winners will be selected from around the country and from these, five will be selected to attend a national final in London. The winner will receive ten years of hearing care courtesy of Specsavers hearing centres and other fantastic prizes.

The awards will celebrate great endeavours among the deaf and hard of hearing community. They will honour someone who has done something exceptional, proved to be a great inspiration to others or who has simply overcome significant hurdles to live a normal life.
