Fundraiser of the month

October 2007

Military bosses’ canis horribilis

The theatre Military Working Dog Support Unit (TMWDSU) in Basra has raised nearly £500 for Hearing Dogs by hosting a ‘Bite your Boss’ sponsored exercise. The TMWDSU provides a search capability to troops on the ground as well as a protective security of installations and locations within the theatre of operations in Iraq. Captain Laura Holmes, officer commanding and the unit’s veterinarian, explains:

“The aim was for each unit within the base to raise as much money as possible. The top five would see their boss dressed in a protective suit hunted down by 42 shiney teeth attached to one of our highly trained protection dogs. The highlight of the night was watching the dogs chase down the Deputy Chief of staff, 1 Mech Bde, whose unit had raised a whopping £165 for the privilege.

“We chose the Hearing Dogs charity because we think the work it does is excellent. Some soldiers suffer temporary and permanent hearing problems after explosions and they find it a crippling experience. We wanted to support a charity that may one day help them regain their confidence in civilian life. The soldiers out there always feel better when they know they have a dog to help them and we do as much as we can to keep them safe.”
