Fundraiser of the month
August 2005
The fundraiser of the month award for August goes to Stoke-on-Trent City Council for enthusiastically embracing Togs for Dogs Day 2005!
The Access team, which is part of the Directorate of Urban Environment within the Council, are heavily involved in raising awareness of disability issues within Stoke-on-Trent. They organised a fundraising and awareness-raising day for Togs for Dogs and council staff entered into the spirit of the Hearing Dogs’ initiative to raise funds and awareness by donating money to discard their usual office outfits and dressing up as cowboys and Indians for the day, raising around £700.
As well as arranging collections internally, the council teamed up with the City Dogs’ Home in Bucknall to organise a sponsored walk in nearby Hanley Park. Participants without pooches could adopt a dog for the day from the local dogs’ home for a £1 donation to Hearing Dogs.
Assistant director of consumer protection for the council Peter Devaney said: “We invited local schools to take part in the walk to help promote good dog ownership and encourage physical activity for primary school children.
“We also had leaflets on dog care and poo bags available free of charge, and dog wardens were on hand to offer advice about any dog-related problems. So as well as being a fun event we hope it helped promote responsible dog ownership – whilst raising vital funds and awareness for a very worthy cause.”
Stoke-on-City Council raised more than £900 in total for Hearing Dogs, as well as valuable awareness of the Charity’s work.
