Fundraiser of the month

November 2005

The Fundraiser of the Month award for November goes to St Ives Day Care Centre.  They have a giant pickle jar – nicknamed ‘the magic jar’ – into which staff and visitors pop their loose change.

In just three years, this ‘magic jar’ has produced £3,000 for good causes, thanks to the generous contributions of people involved with the centre.  At almost full capacity, the jar can hold as much as £100.  Hearing Dogs were delighted to receive a cheque for this amount from centre manager Val Pratley recently.

Val said: “Each time the jar gets filled, we give the money to a different charity.  As we’d recently had a talk from a local lady with a hearing dog, we decided to donate the funds to Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.”

Marion Thulborn from Cambridgeshire has had her hearing dog Cole for two years.  He alerts her to everyday sounds that hearing people take for granted, such as the telephone, doorbell, cooker timer and smoke alarm.  Marion gave a talk at the centre about the difference Cole has made to her life – and was delighted to be presented with a cheque from the proceeds of the pickle jar for the Charity that trained her faithful canine companion.
