Steam car challenge Steam car challenge

End of the road for John O’Groats to Lands End steam-car challengers

A massive thank you and congratulations to Dean Rogers and Steve Baldock for completing the Steam Car Challenge for Hearing Dogs!

The Daventry steam enthusiasts successfully drove 1072 miles all the way from John O’Groats to Lands End in a self-built replica steam car based on the Locomobiles of the early 1900s

The Lykamobile has an average speed of just 10 mph, and it took Dean and Steve two weeks of setting off at 07:00am every morning and driving for 12-14 hours to get to Lands End. The 123 miles on the first day was the furthest that the car had ever travelled before

The car broke down no fewer than 18 times, but Dean says there were never any problems with the mechanics, just the copper piping. It was a fantastic technical achievement, and the experts kept telling them they would never make it. It was also a magnificent achievement in raising awareness of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. Dean says meeting lots of hearing dog partnerships along the way was very inspiring, and gave him the motivation to carry on during the hard times, like being totally exposed to torrential rain and cold weather, and the car breaking down.

It’s the first time in more than 100 years that a car like this has made the historic journey, and Dean and Steve are the toast of the vintage car community. Everyone at Hearing Dogs is very grateful for the effort, commitment and enthusiasm that Dean and Steve have shown throughout the preparation and the trip.

When asked if he would ever do anything like this again, Dean said “When we finished I said never, never, never again…but now we’re already thinking of the next challenge.”
